Located in primarily in Pinal County and at the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, Apache Junction, Arizona (known locally as AJ) has a standing population of around 38,500. But the population of it and the surrounding area explodes during the fall and winter when snowbirds come down from colder parts of the U.S. Not only are they drawn here by the 310 days of sunshine per year, but the mild winter climate.
But they also come down for the plethora of attractions and activities that will keep anyone as busy as they want to be:
- Golf - The area has numerous golf courses both public and private. The green grass set against the desert landscape is something you won’t find anywhere else in the U.S. except here in the Sonoran Southwest.
- Watersports – Close to AJ are three manmade lakes - Canyon, Saguaro and Apache. All of them are great for boating, fishing and other watersport activities.
- Hiking and ATVing – In the immediate and surrounding area are various hiking trails for all levels of hikers, along with many ATV trails that traverse through the desert and mountains.
- Attractions – Just outside of AJ is Goldfield – a reconstructed ghost town featuring a tour of an underground gold mine, a live reptile display, a small railroad that you can ride around the perimeter of the town, a saloon, several stores and an ice cream shop. With everything there is to do, it is not hard to spend a day at Goldfield.
- Apache Trail Auto Tour - The original Apache Trail was a stagecoach route. Today, it is a paved driving route (as far as Tortilla Flats). Before continuing onto the unpaved portion, be sure to stop at Tortilla Flats along the way and eat at the saloon with saddles for bar stools and dollar bills lining the walls.
- Dolly Steamboat Tours. Located on Canyon Lake, this boating attraction offers several different types of narrated steamboat cruises, including Scenic Nature, Twilight Dinner, Astronomy Dinner, and Game, Fish and Bighorn Sheep.

1. CANYON LAKE MARINA & CAMPGROUND
This campground is located several miles outside of Apache Junction next to Canyon Lake. Besides the campground, it also has a 196-slip boat marina.

This Arizona State Park is located in a beautiful desert location right at the base of the Superstition Mountains just east of AJ.

- Because it is a State Park, there is a $7.00 Entrance Fee required, along with a $3.20 non-refundable reservation fee per RV site

3. MESA/APACHE JUNCTION KOA JOURNEY
Located in Apache Junction on the eastern edge of town, this park is close to everything – food, fuel and fun.
